Description
A savory French onion–inspired chicken bake featuring caramelized onions, tender chicken breasts, melted cheese, and rich beefy flavors for a comforting dinner.
Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp fresh thyme (or 1/2 tsp dried)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring often, until caramelized, about 20–25 minutes.
- Stir in garlic, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes until slightly reduced.
- Season chicken breasts with salt and pepper, then place them in a greased baking dish.
- Pour the onion mixture over the chicken and spread evenly.
- Top with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
- Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through (internal temp 165°F / 74°C).
- Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
- Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread.
Notes
- Caramelize onions slowly for deep, rich flavor.
- You can use Gruyère cheese for a more authentic French onion taste.
- Great served with roasted vegetables on the side.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
