Description

A savory French onion–inspired chicken bake featuring caramelized onions, tender chicken breasts, melted cheese, and rich beefy flavors for a comforting dinner.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or 1/2 tsp dried)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring often, until caramelized, about 20–25 minutes.
  3. Stir in garlic, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes until slightly reduced.
  4. Season chicken breasts with salt and pepper, then place them in a greased baking dish.
  5. Pour the onion mixture over the chicken and spread evenly.
  6. Top with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  7. Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through (internal temp 165°F / 74°C).
  8. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread.

Notes

  • Caramelize onions slowly for deep, rich flavor.
  • You can use Gruyère cheese for a more authentic French onion taste.
  • Great served with roasted vegetables on the side.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
