Description

A classic Chinese-American stir fry made with tender beef strips, crisp broccoli, and a savory garlic soy sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, beef broth, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and cornstarch. Set aside.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  3. Add beef slices and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add remaining oil, garlic, and ginger. Stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add broccoli florets and 2–3 tablespoons water. Cover and steam for 2–3 minutes until tender-crisp.
  6. Return beef to the skillet. Pour in sauce mixture and toss everything together until well coated and sauce thickens, about 2 minutes.
  7. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds before serving.

Notes

  • For extra tenderness, marinate beef in 1 teaspoon baking soda and water for 20 minutes before cooking, then rinse well.
  • Serve over steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.
  • You can add bell peppers, carrots, or snap peas for more variety.
