Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon instant espresso powder
- 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- For the Caramel Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup thick caramel sauce
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
- For Garnish:
- 1/4 cup caramel sauce for drizzle
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Dissolve espresso powder in the brewed coffee and set aside.
- In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the batter, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix in the coffee mixture until just combined.
- Divide batter evenly among prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, caramel sauce, and heavy cream. Beat until smooth and fluffy.
- Assemble cake by layering cake and caramel frosting. Frost the top and sides, then drizzle with additional caramel sauce.

- Use homemade or store-bought caramel sauce.
- Chill cake layers before frosting for easier assembly.
- Add a pinch of sea salt to the caramel for a salted caramel variation.
