Description

Juicy hamburger steaks pan-seared to perfection and smothered in a rich, savory brown onion gravy. This classic Southern comfort dish pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes or rice for a hearty, homestyle meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
  3. In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter and add sliced onions. Sauté for 5–7 minutes until caramelized.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute to create a roux.
  6. Slowly whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard (if using). Stir continuously until gravy thickens.
  7. Return hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and simmer for 5–10 minutes.
  8. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use a mix of ground beef and ground pork.
  • You can make this recipe gluten-free by using gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour.
  • If gravy becomes too thick, add a splash of broth or water to loosen it.
  • Best served with mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles.
