Description
Juicy hamburger steaks pan-seared to perfection and smothered in a rich, savory brown onion gravy. This classic Southern comfort dish pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes or rice for a hearty, homestyle meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.
- Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
- In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter and add sliced onions. Sauté for 5–7 minutes until caramelized.
- Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute to create a roux.
- Slowly whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard (if using). Stir continuously until gravy thickens.
- Return hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and simmer for 5–10 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
Notes
- For extra flavor, use a mix of ground beef and ground pork.
- You can make this recipe gluten-free by using gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour.
- If gravy becomes too thick, add a splash of broth or water to loosen it.
- Best served with mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles.
