Description

A hearty, comforting Amish-style casserole made with seasoned hamburger steaks baked in a creamy gravy with onions, potatoes, and classic pantry flavors.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
  3. Form the mixture into 6–8 hamburger patties.
  4. In a skillet, melt butter and sear the patties for 2–3 minutes per side until browned. (They will finish cooking in the oven.)
  5. Arrange the sliced potatoes evenly in the baking dish.
  6. Place the browned hamburger steaks on top of the potatoes.
  7. Spread the sliced onions over the patties.
  8. In a bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup with the milk until smooth, then pour evenly over the dish.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until potatoes are tender and sauce is bubbly.
  11. Rest 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Add sliced mushrooms for extra flavor.
  • Swap cream of mushroom soup with cream of chicken or cream of celery.
  • Use lean ground beef to reduce greasiness.
  • Pairs perfectly with green beans or buttered corn.
