Description
A hearty, comforting Amish-style casserole made with seasoned hamburger steaks baked in a creamy gravy with onions, potatoes, and classic pantry flavors.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tbsp butter
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Form the mixture into 6–8 hamburger patties.
- In a skillet, melt butter and sear the patties for 2–3 minutes per side until browned. (They will finish cooking in the oven.)
- Arrange the sliced potatoes evenly in the baking dish.
- Place the browned hamburger steaks on top of the potatoes.
- Spread the sliced onions over the patties.
- In a bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup with the milk until smooth, then pour evenly over the dish.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until potatoes are tender and sauce is bubbly.
- Rest 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.

- Add sliced mushrooms for extra flavor.
- Swap cream of mushroom soup with cream of chicken or cream of celery.
- Use lean ground beef to reduce greasiness.
- Pairs perfectly with green beans or buttered corn.
